If you often find your pocket knives or gutting blades dulling while you’re out fishing or hunting, this is a great item to add to your kit.For 20 years now, the Benchmade 940 has been a staple in the company’s lineup. While we wouldn’t necessarily use the Smith’s diminutive sharpener on expensive chef’s knives, it is certainly a handy sharpener to quickly tune up an assortment of run-of-the-mill knives. Using a tomato to gauge how sharp we got our test knife, we sliced into it with moderate pressure, without sawing. Still, we were impressed that we could make knives that had bounced around the dishwasher sharp and useful so quickly with this sharpener. This made them sharp enough that we could slice through paper, although not perfectly cleanly. In less than a minute, we were able to cut a new edge on abused kitchen knives with the carbide side of the sharpener and finish them up on the ceramic side. Surprisingly, it’s actually quite effective. It’s worth noting that the abrasives are smaller than some stones, which might make it more difficult to sharpen anything larger than a 10-inch kitchen knife.Īt a glance, Smith’s two-step sharpener seems too small and too simple to warrant consideration. Work Sharp also makes a set of 15- and 17-degree angle guides that are appropriate for Japanese-style kitchen knives. If you’re just learning how to sharpen by stone (or it’s been awhile since you last used one), the removable angle guides are helpful and beginner-friendly. We also appreciated the Pivot Response feature, which allows the stone to tilt with our strokes.Īlthough it was less of a concern with our very dull test knife, beware of removing more metal than necessary on the coarse diamond abrasives, and consider regularly honing your undamaged blades on the ceramic face to extend the length of time between more rigorous sharpenings. Instead, we simply rotated it to our desired sharpening surface and got to work. It was nice to avoid soaking or dousing anything with water, like traditional whetstones require. The tool has three sides, each with a different abrasive that’s designed for dry sharpening. Useful and inexpensive, the 191H is a good choice for regular light-duty blade maintenance.įor one sharpening system to tackle every dull blade in your house, pick the Benchstone. It quickly cleaned up the edges on a pair we’ve had for several years that hadn’t been sharpened before. We appreciated the addition of the leftmost abrasive that’s built for sharpening scissors. ![]() Still, this was faster than other manual models we tried, and if you’re mostly using it for twice-monthly touch-ups, you’ll need considerably less elbow grease. As for sharpening ability, it took north of 70 passes between the two stages to restore a good cutting edge to our dull test knife. This design allows for one-handed operation. It’s small enough to fit inside your silverware drawer or sit discreetly on your countertop, meaning you’ll spend less time setting it up than a bulkier electric machine that you have to fish out from the cabinet above the refrigerator.Ĭlamping down the lever behind the sharpening slots activated the suction cup base, and once that was engaged, the 191H didn’t budge on countertops. When your paring knife needs a quick tune-up, grab this pint-size manual sharpener. The obvious hangup with this model is cost, but if you’re committed to an electric option, your money will be well spent here. ![]() Credit the Trizor’s diamond abrasives, which shave the metal easily, and its acute sharpening angle.Ĭhef’s Choice also thoughtfully includes a third stage designed for stropping, which removes any microscopic bumps or pits on the edge of the blade-this is pretty rare to see on an electric knife sharpener. By comparison, the knife required ten times as many strokes on one of the sharpening stones we tested before it was usable. The knife needed more force to break the tomato’s skin, but once it did, it sliced through the fruit cleanly. ![]() In just nine passes per side, our chef’s knife smoothly tore a long slit into the piece of paper. ![]() Its electric design is undeniably convenient and proved very effective. We tend to agree with the sharpening purists of the world who tout the benefits of using whetstones-but we found ourselves questioning our allegiance after we used the Trizor. ![]() 8/19/2023 0 Comments Long acrylic nails shapes![]() ![]() Leaving your acrylic nails on for too long can cause various problems to the nail plate. Stick-on nails are precisely that they stick on with special glue. The oldest technique is probably applying acrylics with a brush and monomer liquid that hardens when exposed to air. Gel nails use a light-activated polish which is cured (cured means set) using UV/LED lamps. Each is a type of polymer or resin – similar to plastic – that can be applied on top of the natural nail to create an artificial (and often more colourful) layer. The story goes beyond the Radium Dial case and reflects much about our attitudes toward work, women, mental illness and aging. Stout has found a unique voice in which to tell the tragic story of the Radium Dial workers and at the same time to say much about life in this country. Sometimes fiction can speak truth in ways that the bare facts cannot. So when I came across Radium Halos by Shelley Stout I was very excited. I am sure this background is one reason I became a government lawyer enforcing workers' rights. I was deeply proud of my father and infuriated, as he was, by the injustice inflicted on these women. I grew up in the shadow of the Radium Dial case, a landmark in workers' rights in this country. The lasting legacy of the women's fight led to the introduction of new safety standards to protect a whole new generation of dial painters, as well as those working with plutonium in making atomic bombs.Radium Halos is historical fiction based on the true events of the Radium Dial Painters, a group of female factory workers who, in the early 1920s, contracted radiation poisoning from painting luminous watch dials with radium paint. It took eight appeals before the former radium girls finally had a victory, in October 1939. To this end, we recently considered the current state of horror games and what lies ahead for a genre driven by creativity and risk. Like The Exorcist, Team Silent’s Silent Hill games have lost their edge in visual terror terms, but are nevertheless intergral to where the genre stands today. Fold in the technical and aesthetic strides video games have made since Toyama’s last involvement in horror, and Slitterhead really could be something really special. Throw the possibility of unpredictable baddies into that mix, and I’m already sold. Just the thought of dawdling around the hallways of that very apartment complex, fumbling broken locks and circumventing stacked filing cabinets which inexplicably block stairways to key areas simultaneously fills me with joy and dread. Psychological horror lies at the heart of classic Silent Hill, and I love the thought of shapeshifters playing a role here in Slitterhead – whereby no one can be trusted, and anyone could be hostile. In a flash, her creature-like head – scales, tentacle tongue and all – retracts, folding neatly back into place, to reform her otherwise normal human face. Homes are tightly knitted together in the multi-story structure, and, when the camera zooms in, we’re shown a woman standing on a veranda who’s clearly been infected by the parasites we’ve seen earlier. We’re shown a wide shot of a high-rise apartment block situated within what looks like an industrial area. Perhaps the most exciting takeaway from Slitterhead’s reveal trailer, though, arrives at its very end. From what we’ve seen so far from the latter studio’s upcoming Ghostwire Tokyo, it too is adopting a more hands-on, conflict-leaning approach in its interpretation of the scare ‘em up for the modern age.Ĭreativity and risk are driving modern horror games – but where does the genre go next? Resident Evil has pivoted towards more action-inspired first-person terror in recent years, while Tango Gameworks’ The Evil Within breached the shores of open-world horror in its second series entry of 2017. The high-octane, action-heavy style of Slitterhead of course flies in the face of classic Silent Hill’s more pensive sensibilities, but, at this stage at least, this doesn’t feel unnatural given the direction of blockbuster horror in 2021. And he came back to face a new challenge in horror.” In practice, Slitterhead looks like Silent Hill turned up to 11 – with grotesque, shapeshifting monsters aplenty the dismemberment of bewildered civilians and police officers alike and a ninja-aping, motorcycle helmet-wearing, sword-wielding chap who goes to town on the ethereal beings, who may or may not be the game’s protagonist. In 2020, he went independent and founded Bokeh Game Studio. Clearly keen to tap into this lineage, the trailer spends its opening stretch outlining Toyama’s credentials, informing us that “in 1999, Keiichiro Toyama chose horror as the genre for his first directorial work. This also marks the first new game from Keiichiro Toyama since 2017's Gravity Rush 2.There’s barely a minute of cinematic footage in Slitterhead’s reveal trailer, but it’s surely enough to get horror fans and, more specifically, Silent Hill fans, buzzing. Slitterhead was unveiled during The Game Awards 2021, and will be the first game from the newly formed Bokeh Game Studio. You can watch the entire 11-minute video above. "From there," he says, "I dive into what is possible to make in terms of sound, and then I start working." Regarding composition in general, Yamaoka says he starts every new project by thinking about the idea as a whole, considering what the game will offer to anyone who plays it. "Rather than perfect matches, we look for some sort of misalignment, which makes it feel more fresh and attractive," he explains. He uses a Japanese phrase "Ki wo terau"-to deliberately act strange-as an example of his ideas for the game's music. Yamaoka says he first heard of the new game while out drinking with Toyama, who was using words like "Nineties," "urban," and "Asian taste." "When I finally heard of Slitterhead," Yamaoka says, "it's like the dots had finally been connected." ![]() 8/18/2023 0 Comments Studio manager jobs columbus ohio![]() If you see a first responder, chances are they're a Columbus State grad. “They had such a huge impact on me that, after I graduated, I came back to Columbus State as adjunct professor in construction sciences,” he said.
